I'm In My 20s — Why Do I Already Have Wrinkles?
Why is your skin already showing signs of aging when you’ve barely begun your adventure as an adult? Why are you struggling with crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, or laugh lines when your friends have smooth, satiny skin?
At Aesthetics, by Dr. Lee, our dedicated team — led by expert dermatologist Dr. Luis Lee — understands your frustration and bafflement. At our offices in Roseville, California, serving the greater Sacramento area, we determine what’s led to your premature wrinkles and how best to give you the youthful skin you crave.
Why do you have wrinkles in your 20s? Here are some reasons why you might.
You’re aging naturally
Although you're still youthful, by the time you’re in your 20s, you've begun to actively age. The closer you get to 30, the more likely you are to see the signs of aging, including changes to your skin. Of course, just because something is natural doesn’t mean you have to stand for it.
Blame your genes
You may have inherited thin, fine skin from your parents. When your skin is already thin, it’s more susceptible to the damage from things that cause wrinkles, including sunlight exposure, poor nutrition, and extreme expressions.
You’re extremely expressive
Some of the first wrinkles that show up on young faces are those caused by dynamic muscles that create expressions. Common wrinkles in youth include:
- Forehead furrows from raising your eyebrows
- “Eleven” lines between your brows from frowning
- Crow’s feet at corners of your eyes from squinting or laughing
- Bunny line at top of your nose from wrinkling your nose
The best way to get rid of expressive wrinkles is to tame the overactive dynamic facial muscles that cause them. Regular Botox® injections keep your skin smooth and your expressions natural.
You worship Apollo
Excessive, unprotected exposure to the sun god’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is responsible for 90% of unwanted changes to your skin. While the sun feels soothing and warm on your skin, UVA and UVB actually damage the DNA in your skin cells.
Wrinkles are the least of your problems if you’re exposed to UVA and UVB. You also drastically increase your risk for skin cancer. Lower those risks, and improve your skin’s health, by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every time you’re outdoors or by a sunny window.
Sunbathing or using a tanning machine are both equally destructive to your skin.
Short-term, unprotected sun exposure in the morning can be beneficial by stimulating your body’s production of vitamin D and establishing a healthy circadian rhythm. But after 20 minutes of morning sun, reach for the sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
You eat junk food
You are what you eat, and so’s your skin. If you don’t hydrate enough and get high-quality nutrients in the form of healthy protein, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables, it shows up as skin problems.
Junk food, overly processed foods, and fast foods are high in calories but low in nutrients. They also tend to cause inflammation in your body, which can then have negative effects on your skin, including acne and wrinkles.
You smoke and drink
Maybe lung cancer and other types of cancer that smoking causes seem too abstract and far away to force you to give up cigarettes today. You’re young and you like to smoke, so why shouldn’t you continue?
If you see wrinkles in your skin, cigarettes are affecting you right now. Smoking dehydrates your entire body, depriving your organs of the blood, oxygen, and nutrients they need to stay healthy. One of your largest organs is also the most visible — your skin.
Alcohol, too, has dehydrating effects and robs your skin of moisture. If you want beautiful skin, take care of your entire body by quitting smoking and excessive alcohol use as soon as possible.
