What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable treatment for submental (double chin) fat. This injection is made from a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a substance that is already produced in the body. Deoxycholic acid is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of fat. When Kybella is placed under the chin, it will essentially liquefy the fat in that area by targeting the fat cells.

How many Kybella treatments are needed?

Treatment depends on the patient and on the amount of submental fat that they have. Most people need to have a total of between 2 and 4 total Kybella treatments. Kybella treatments are usually arranged at 6-week intervals.

Is Kybella the same as Liposuction?

No, Kybella is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia like liposuction surgery does. Both procedures target fat from the area under the chin, but they are completely separate procedures. Kybella is less costly and less invasive than liposuction, so many patients today find it to be the superior option. Patients can expect to return to normal activity immediately after the Kybella procedure.

What is Kybella treatment like?

Kybella treatment is quick, usually taking under half an hour. The needles used in the treatment are extremely thin and are unlikely to cause serious pain or discomfort, but Dr. Lee can provide a numbing cream to make sure that patients are comfortable during the treatment. After the treatment, patients can apply ice packs to alleviate any minor discomfort that may occur.

Is Kybella treatment long-lasting?

Yes, Kybella results can be considered long lasting since fat cells are treated and flushed. If a patient gains weight after Kybella treatment, it is possible that entirely new fat cells will form in the under the chin area. However, the original fat cells will not return. It is recommended that patients maintain a healthy weight to make sure that they can always enjoy their Kybella results.
